Heading
This exquisite bag was tapestry crocheted with pearl cot-
South
ton and beads. The beauty of tapestry crocheting with
Rasta
beads is that each thread can be loaded with one color of
Bag
bead and only the color that is needed at the time is cro-
cheted to form a pattern while the other thread is carried.
Carol Ventura
The result is a sturdy cloth with unlimited pattern potential.

BASE
Step 1:
Preparation. Use a needle to string the beads onto the
thread: green onto green, amber onto gold, and root beer
onto red. Slide the beads down the thread to have 30"
without beads at the start.
Round 1:
Use the green thread to make a slipknot leaving
a 10" tail. Ch 64.
Note:
Increase or decrease in multiples
of 11 to make a wider or narrower bag. Starting with the
second ch from hook, work bsc to the last loop of the
chain. Work 3 bsc into the last chain for a total of 65
beads. Turn piece over and continue working bsc along
the bottom side of the chain, carrying the tail as you go.
End with 2 bsc into the last ch. This first round should
have a total of 128 beaded stitches.
Round 2:
Begin to carry the gold thread while working with
green. To keep the base flat, increase each round by 8
stitches; 4 at each end. Begin this round with 2 bsc into
the first stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 60 bsc (one in
each stitch), 2 bsc into each of the next 4 stitches, 60 bsc,
and 2 bsc into the next two stitches (136 beads total).
Round 3:
Continue to crochet with green while carrying
the gold thread. Work 2 bsc into the first stitch, 1 bsc
into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 62 bsc (one
in each stitch), 2 bsc into the next stitch, 1 bsc into the
next stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next
stitch, 1 bsc into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch,
62 bsc, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 1 bsc into the next stitch,
then 2 bsc into the next stitch (144 beads total).

Continue to crochet with green while carrying
the gold thread. Work 1 bsc into each of the first 2
stitches, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 1 bsc into the next
stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 66 bsc, 2 bsc into the

 Tapestry crochet
For rounds using two col-
ors, carry the color not in
use along the top of the
stitches of the previous
round, covering it as you
work single crochets. Carry
a second color for one-
color rounds to maintain a
consistent stitch height.
To change colors, insert the
hook under both loops of
the stitch being worked
into. Pull up the first loop of
the stitch with the old color
(2 loops on hook, Figure 1),
then yarnover with the new
color and pull through both
loops on the hook (Figure
2). Continue to single cro-
chet across the row while
carrying the previously cro-
cheted yarn (Figure 3).
Figure 1
Bead Single Crochet
Insert the hook from the wrong side of the fabric, yarnover and draw
a loop through (2 loops on hook). Slide a bead next to the hook,
yarnover and draw the yarn through both loops (Figure 4). The bead
will be fixed to the back side of the work. The beads will slant at an
angle on the backside of the stitch. By working the piece in the
round, the beads will slant at the same angle on every round.

Make a slipknot on hook. Yarn
over hook and draw it through
loop of slipknot. Repeat, drawing
yarn through the last loop formed.

Changing thread
As beads or thread run out, or to change a thread,
begin to carry the new beaded thread 10 stitches
before it is needed; work the 10 stitches, then switch
to the new beaded thread, carrying the old thread for
10 stitches before trimming it.
T racking rounds
This piece is worked as a spiral, not in concentric
rows, so it is difficult to tell where each round ends. To
keep track of where each round ends, slip a safety pin
or stitch counter into the top of the last stitch of the
round, then remove it as you come around again and
slip it into the new last stitch. Or lay a 2" thread of a
contrasting color across the path of the last stitch and
fold it over at the end of each round.
next stitch, 1 bsc into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next
stitch, then 1 bsc into each of the last 3 stitches (168
beads total).
Round 7:
Continue to crochet with green while carrying
the gold thread. Work 1 bsc into each of the first 4
stitches, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 1 bsc into the next
stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 70 bsc, 2 bsc into the
next stitch, 1 bsc into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next
stitch, 8 bsc, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 1 bsc into the next
stitch, 2 bsc into the next stitch, 70 bsc, 2 bsc into the
next stitch, 1 bsc into the next stitch, 2 bsc into the next
stitch, then 1 bsc into each of the last 4 stitches (176
beads total).
Round 8:
Continue to crochet with green (background)
while carrying the gold (bird) thread. Work 1 bsc into
each stitch. From now on, each round has 176 bsc.

SIDES
Step 2:
Refer to the chart for Rounds 9–32, read from right
to left and bottom to top. The graph is for right-handed
crocheters. Left-handed crocheters should look at the
reversed image of the graph in a mirror. The bird appears
to be reversed because the beads fall to the back of the
stitch, which is the outside of the bag.
Remember, that to do a tapestry crochet stitch, col-
ors are switched while 2 loops are still on the hook; yarn
over with the next color and pull it through the loops
to prepare for the tapestry crochet stitch (Figures 1–3).
Round 9:
Work 176 bsc with background color (A) while
carrying the bird color (B).

Work 176A while carrying the bird thread.
Round 32:
Work 176A; cut the carried thread (gold) and
start to carry the next background thread (red).
Rounds 33–55:
Repeat Rounds 9–31 using red for the back-
ground (A) and green for the bird (B).
Round 56:
Work bsc around with red; cut the carried thread
(green) and start to carry the next background thread
(gold).
Rounds 57–79:
Repeat Rounds 9–32 using gold for the back-
ground (A) and red for the bird (B).
Round 80:
Cut the carried thread (red) and start to carry
the handle color (green).
HANDLE
Step 3:
The handle is 12 rows wide and worked along with
the top six rounds of the bag, one half at a time.
Round 81:
Work 72 green bsc then cut the gold thread. Use
the green thread to work 100 ch without beads; add or
subtract chain stitches at this point to make the strap
longer or shorter. Insert the hook into the other side of
the top of the bag, 88 stitches away from the base of the
chain.
Round 82
Begin to carry the gold thread and work 88 green
bsc around the top of the bag to reach the chain. Work
green bsc onto the chain while carrying the gold thread.
Rounds 83–86:
Work green bsc around the top of the bag,
then on the strap, while carrying the gold thread.
Decrease one stitch at each of the two inside corners of
the junction between the strap and the bag.
Round 87:
Work green bsc around the top of the bag, then
on the strap, while carrying the gold thread. Decrease
one stitch at each of the two inside corners of the junc-
tion between the strap and the bag. At the end of the
round, cut the gold thread flush. Work a slip stitch, cut
the green thread, leaving a 6" tail, then yarn over and
pull it all the way through the loop. Work the tail in for
2" to secure it, then trim it flush.
Round 88:
Turn the bag over. Insert the hook into the upper
right corner of the bag next to the shoulder strap. Pull
a loop of green thread through, leaving a 2" tail at the
back. Work 1 green ch, then 1 green bsc into the same
stitch. Start to carry the gold thread along with the 2"
tail of green thread while you work 88 green bsc around
the top of the bag until arriving at the strap. Continue
bsc onto the strap, inserting the hook into the bottom
loops of the original chain while carrying the gold thread.
Rounds 89–91:
Repeat Rounds 83–87.
FINISHING
Step 4:
Block the bag with a steam iron from the cloth side
(do not place the iron on the beaded side).

While Carol Ventura served as a Peace Corps volunteer in highland
Guatemala in the 1970s, she was inspired by the colorful tapestry
crocheted shoulder bags made there. Since that time she has explored
the design potential of the technique, developed a system of dia-
gramming patterns, and created a variety of flat and three-dimen-
sional projects, which she shares in her tapestry crochet books and
video. To order
